Re: Should Marcus Browne have been given more of a chance at West Ham?
Yes...would have been good to see him in action...a few sub appearances to judge him...
Diangana had a few good games to begin with...but tailed off quickly...

Was reading that his agent is part of Rio's management company and it was Rio that persuaded Woodgate to take a punt on him.

Which of our let go academy players over the past 5 years has actually made us think, shit, should have held on to him? can't really think of any.

you could extend that to 35 years at least

with Diangana in the squad, and Holland and Diallo coming though there isn't room for all of them in a position we are already stacked with senior players

Re: Should Marcus Browne have been given more of a chance at West Ham?
One of my wife's co-worker and her partner have a season ticket at Oxford United and she has invited us to a few games most seasons.

He could look brilliant at times at that level last year, and they certainly wanted him back.

That said he was not a locked-in star performer every match.
Started 25 out of 46 games, in the league. 7 goals/4 assists and he does like a yellow (and one red) card.

Would have like to keep him another year maybe but was would not be near the level of the first team any time soon.

Re: Should Marcus Browne have been given more of a chance at West Ham?
It seems the highest rated ones in recent years (Hall, Oxford, Browne and there has been a few more) get moved on and those that come out of the (relative) wilderness (Rice, Diangana, Johnson) seem to fit in well.

Re: Should Marcus Browne have been given more of a chance at West Ham?
I rate Browne more than Diangana. I think Diangana is poor at shooting, yesterday another example of him scuffing his shot.He won't play many games this season.
The goal Browne scored for the U23'w the other day in Slovakia is a clear example of what he can do. He will score goals.
The big deal is for him to settle and in Middlesborough, a hell of a place in winter where you need to be a local to survive the difference between the NE and much warmer SE. He needs to be injury free and in a succesfull winning team at the Boro.Doesn't have to be promotion. If they do well (top 6 ) and he does too then he can come back south. I'm sure a team that is promoted next season will have a good look at him over the duration.
It's a pity that he is gone. Pellegrini is good at promoting defensive minded academy players but not so much attacking players. Diangana fell into a squad place. He's good but not as good as Browne.
Have a great season Marcus, get your family settled in,score plenty of goals....think of it as one season.....he'll be off to Spurs or Arsenal this time next year

Re: Should Marcus Browne have been given more of a chance at West Ham?
It was a group of senior players led by Bonds and Parkes who asked John Lyle to reconsider letting Houghton go.
The problem was that Allen, Barnes and Dickens were coming from the youth team and Cowie and Dale Banton were established reserves - Banton scored for fun.
Wrong decision but understandable

No, if the manager thinks not then I trust him.

However, I am not sure about the policy of getting rid so soon. For me, both him and Cullen should have been offered another year and then loaned out. A good year at championship level would see their values increase massively.

The point I was making was no one else scouts or other manager at the time rated him. I don't think we even got a fee for him and Fulham I believe were in the second tier. Hindsight
is wonderful thing.

Good luck to him. Would he have played for us this season probably not.
Maybe this is what he needs to kick on in his career he will but starting most weeks for middlesbrough by the looks of it.

The point was maybe other managers could have give him a chance, but seems when he just getting good he got injured at the wrong time.

Re: Should Marcus Browne have been given more of a chance at West Ham?
Rumford,

Brooking was coming to the end of his career so that wasn't the issue. It was Alan Dickens coming through at the same time that made Lyall think he had to choose between the 2 players. In retrospect he made the wrong decision.

Word is that when Alvin Martin found out Houghton was being released he told John Lyall that he was making a mistake.

"Also, for those saying trust Pellegtrini, that’s only true to an extent. It’s in his interests to make sure our first team is as good as possible, it isn’t necessarily in his interests to make sure the long term development of youth players is as good as possible because his focus is on the present, not a future that he is unlikely to be around for."

There's maybe a slight element of truth in that, Hermit Road. And theres an argument that Browne should have been given the same opportunity as Diagana.

But, at the end of the day, we're now a side that is looking to push on into Europe, so the margin for error is not very big. Its the nature of the beast, I'm afraid.

I'd like to see a lot of our youth players given a run in our first team, but that's based more on a sentimental, romantic notion, rather than actually thinking or more importantly, knowing that they're good enough.

I hope we've done something like what Andy said and part of me also agrees with Pagey, - in that Browne should have been loaned to a Championship side, as i think all our good prospects should be.

But then part of me thinks maybe the reason why our youngsters are not being loaned to Championship sides, is because they won't ever be good enough to be considered for our first team.

We, understandably a lot of the time think emotionally and romantically about these things but theres not a lot of room to think like this in a miliion/billion pound cut throat industry.

swindon hammer i agree.

In the case of Ray Houghton he had Brooking and Devonshire in front of him. I also read some where that John Lyall did all he could to find him a good move but Fulham were the only takers.Houghton still speaks well of John Lyall and our club.

Re: Should Marcus Browne have been given more of a chance at West Ham?
How many players from our academy have we released or moved on and it's come back to haunt us?

Matt Holland had a decent career so that may have been a mistake and Ray Houghton was a major fuck up by John Lyall but can't think of anyone else.

We seem to have this conversation every time an academy player leaves. I remember some were up in arms when we let Zavon Hines leave.

Re: Should Marcus Browne have been given more of a chance at West Ham?
He probably just isnt good enough for us right now, he's 21 so would need a squad place and in the last year of his deal hence the low fee. Lets see how he goes but my guess is he'll turn out like all the other youngsters we've relaesed.

Good luck to him though

Re: Should Marcus Browne have been given more of a chance at West Ham?
I watched a lot of Browne in the U23’s where he, Rice and Holland were clear standouts.

Diangana got an opportunity with Holland injured and Browne at Oxford or injured. He was knowhere near as influential in U23 games as a provider or goalscorer as either Browne or Holland.

Browne is very talented. Highly technical and the rare ability to explode past a player with skill and speed. He’s a bull. BUT, he seems to pick up injuries a lot already and never has a big run of games. With injuries he sometimes struggles to be 100% match fit so may flicker in and out of games. The worry from a West Ham point of view is if he stays fit and gets a run of games in a team that suits his game. Definitely a chance he could be a bit special. That’s a big IF though.

He should have got some mins for our first team at least on the back of his U23 performances alone.
